The chief town of Pantellería, with a population of 5,000, is a natural harbor in a bay on the northwest coast, with the medieval Castello Barbacane towering above it. It is well provided with hotels and restaurants. The little airport lies 4km/2.5mi to the southeast, at the foot of Mont Sant'Elmo. From here - or better still from the top of the
836m/2,744ft high Montagna Grande - there is a superb panoramic view stretching as far as the African coast.
Excursions
Other places to visit in the interior of the island are San Vito, south of the airport, Vale di Ghirlanda, southeast of Montagna Grande, and Khamma on the east side of the island.
A 40km/25mi road leading round the island passes through numerous little towns and villages.
4km/2.5mi south of the chief town lie the Neolithic settlement of Mursia and the burial towers (sesi) reminiscent of the nuraghi of Sardinia. After passing through the little port of Scaur and the south end of the island (Balata dei Turchi, or Turkish Gallery) the visitor will come to the "far side of the island" (Dietro Isola). Then the road returns along the east coast back to the chief town, passing the Punta Levante and Cala dei Cinque Denti (Bay of the Five Teeth).
A boat trip from the town of Pantellería or from Scauri, on the southwest coast, will be found worthwhile; it takes visitors to the marine caves and the Grotto dello Storto and Faraglione Dietro Isola (isolated crags in the sea).
The hotels on this largely unspoiled island also offer beaches and bays for swimming, and there are facilities for underwater sports.
