Naro Attractions

This picturesque little town lies on a hill east of Agrigento and has monuments from the medieval and Baroque periods.

The ruins of the Chiesa Matrice Vecchia (ogival doorway) date from the Gothic period, whilst the new Chiesa Matrice (former Jesuit church) was built in the 18th century (sculptures by Gagini), as one of several Baroque churches.
Castle
In the 13th century the town walls of Naro with their battlements were built; in the 14th century the Chiaramonte family, as feudal lords, built the castle on the highest point in the town. This had earlier been the site of a Saracen fortification (keep, hall with double windows).
Catacombs (Necropolises)
In the Donna Licata and Canal Baglio districts of Naro can be seen remains of Christian catacombs and the necropolis "Grotta delle Meraviglie".
San Francesco
In the center of the town stands San Francesco with its early Baroque facade, built before 1635, its interior containing a very richly decorated sacristy dating from 1721. The facade of the former Benedictine church of San Salvatore remains unfinished; the interior contains the dark green marble sarcophagus of Giuseppe Lucchesi, which is a copy of the sarcophagus of Frederick II in Palermo (another copy made of similar materials is to be found in the cathedral of Mazara del Vallo).
