Southwest of Terni, commandingly situated on a high crag on the left bank of the Nera, which here forces its way out of the Terni basin through a narrow ravine, is the little medieval town of Narni (240m/792ft; pop. 21,000). In the center of the town stands the cathedral, which is mainly 11th century, with a porch of 1497 and a fine interior. In the nearby Piazza Priora are the beautiful Loggia dei Priori (14th century) and the Palazzo del Podestà which now houses the municipal offices. Below the town, on the line of the ancient Via Flaminia, are the ruins of the so-called Bridge of Augustus.
