Ferla Attractions
The little town of Ferla, to the northeast of Palazzolo Acréide and 540m/1,772ft above sea-level, has some noteworthy Baroque churches. It is approached by driving north from Palazzolo Acréide towards Caltagirone, then turning right via Cassaro to Ferla.
San Sebastano is a triple-aisled columned basilica with a crossing cupola. The crown of the impressively designed doorway is sculpted in the form of the young martyr Sebastian between two nuns and two Roman legionnaires.
The church of Sant'Antonio Abbate has a front which, although incomplete, is powerful in concept; the richly fitted interior comprises an octagonal, vaulted central nave with four transepts and four small chancels in the diagonals.
