Fano Tourist Attractions

Fano, the ancient Fanum Fortunae, built on the site of a temple of Fortuna, and now a popular seaside resort, lies on the Adriatic, southeast of Pesaro.
There is a Municipal Museum in the town center with many local artifacts.

Piazza XX Settembre

The central feature of Fano, which is still surrounded by its medieval walls and a deep moat, is the Piazza XX Settembre.

Palazzo della Ragione

In the Piazza XX Settembre are the Palazzo della Ragione (built in 1299 and used since 1862 as a theater) and the Torre Civica. On the south side of the square is the beautiful Fontana della Fortuna (1593). The Palazzo Malatesta, at the north end of the square, is the municipal museum, and also contains a lapidarium, a coin collection and a small collection of pictures.

Cathedral

Northwest of the Piazza XX Settembre is the Piazza Mercato, from which Via dell'Arco d'Augusto leads to the Romanesque cathedral of San Fortunato; inside are 16 frescoes by Domenicchino (1623).

Arch of Augustus

Near the Cathedral of San Fortunato in Fano the triumphal triple Arch of Augustus (Arco di Augusto; second century; remodeled in the ninth century) spans the street. The original form of the arch can be seen on the facade of the adjoining church of San Michele (Renaissance doorway).

Santa Maria Nuova

To the south of the Piazza XX Settembre stands the church of Santa Maria Nuova, which contains two pictures by Perugino, a "Sacra Conversazione" (third altar right: 1497) and an "Annunciation" (second altar left).
