The upper town of Colle di Val d'Elsa has preserved its medieval aspect and remains of its 13th century walls. In the Piazza del Duomo stands the cathedral, built in 1619, which contains a Crucifix attributed to the sculptor Giambologna (Giovanni di Bologna, 1529-1608).
The little town of Monteriggioni is impressively situated on a hill above the Elsa Valley. It is surrounded by a complete circuit of 13th century walls, perfectly preserved, with 14 square towers which can be seen from a considerable distance away.
Adjoining the cathedral in Colle di Val d'Elsa is the Palazzo Pretorio (originally 13th century), with the Museo Archeológico (material from a nearby Etruscan cemetery).
