Carpi Attractions
North of Modena is the interesting town of Carpi (28m/92ft; pop. 60,000). In the center of the town is the large Piazza dei Martiri, in which stand the New Cathedral (begun 1514; facade 1667), the Loggia, the 15th century Colonnades (52 arches) and the old Castello (now partly occupied by a museum) of the Pio family, who ruled here from 1327 to 1525; in the second courtyard is a memorial to the victims of the Second World War. Behind the Castello is the Old Cathedral, founded in 751, La Sagra (Romanesque interior, with a 12th century pulpit), adjoining which is a campanile of 1221.
