SS 115 Agrigento-Ragusa, turning off at Gela in a northwesterly direction.
Location
Butera is situated 19km/12mi to the northwest of Gela, 402m/1,319ft high on a mountain crest in the countryside behind the Golfo di Gela not far from the south coast. It was founded by the Arabs, but after they had been driven out, the Normans in 1096 built a substantial fortress which dominates the town. The 15th century doorway of the "municipio" is striking and the Chiesa Madre contains paintings of the Raphael school.
