Buccheri Attractions
The little town of Buccheri, situated 15km/9.5mi northwest of Palazzolo Acréide on the SS 124, has two Baroque churches worthy of mention, the Chiesa della Maddalena and the church of Sant'Antonio Abbate.
The Chiesa della Maddalena, built in 1709 to plans drawn up by Michelangelo Di Giacomo, is a triple-aisled columned basilica with a richly-ornamented front and a broad bell-cage protruding from the gable.
The church of Sant'Antonio Abbate stands proudly at the top of a tall flight of steps. A feature of the front is the tall tower-like and three-storyed middle section flanked by columns; it culminates in a narrower bell-loft surmounted by a cupola. Similar three-storyed tower fronts but probably of an earlier date are to be found in, for example, Palazzolo and Scicli.
