From Bagni di Lucca follow the SS 12 as it runs south, down through the lower Serchio Valley to Borgo a Mozzano (97m/318ft; population 8,000). The chief point of interest in the town is the spectacular Ponte della Maddalena - also known as the Ponte del Diávolo or Devil's Bridge - its name deriving from a statue of Mary Magdalene which stood
near by but which is now in the parish church. The Gothic stone bridge was erected in the 12th century by Margravine Mathilda and is attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio. In addition to the statue of Mary Magdalene, the parish church of San Iácopo possesses a number of 16th century terracottas from the school of Andrea della Robbia.
