Istanbul - Istanbul Metro
Construction started in 1993 on the initial 7.5km section of the Istanbul Metro. Track was laid from Levend to Taksim for a 29.2km heavy metro to serve the old city area, where it would be impossible to accommodate light rail running. Tunneling was due for completion during 1995 and the public service is scheduled to start in 1998.
The second phase, from Taksim to Yenikapi, includes a suspension bridge over the Golden Horn. Construction is expected to start once tunneling on the initial section is complete.
