The town
Ramallah now adjoins the Arab town of Bira. As a result of the proximity of Jerusalem the town developed considerably since the period of the Mandate. Thanks to its altitude (870m/2,855ft) and its climate Ramallah became a popular altitude resort.
Northwest of the town center, on the road to En Qinya, are the ruins of a church and monastery of the Byzantine period, and on a hill above the town are the remains of a Frankish church.
