3km/2mi north of Migdal on the shores of the Sea of Galilee is the kibbutz of Ginnosar, founded in 1937. Its principal attraction is the fishing-boat of the time of Jesus which is displayed here. The remains of the boat, buried in mud near the edge of the lake, were discovered in 1986 after a long period of drought led to a sharp fall in the water level. The boat, 8.20m/27ft long by 2.30m/7.5ft wide, has been dated to between 70 B.C. and A.D. 90, and was used for fishing just off the shores of the lake. In order to preserve it for posterity the water which had soaked into the wood is being replaced by wax.
In a cave in the Amud valley, which reaches the lake at Ginnosar, the skull of Galilee Man, who lived 100,000 years ago, was found in 1925.
