Cuevas de Punta del Este

On the southeastern corner of Islas de la Juventud are the Cuevas de Punta del Este. These are series of caves best known for the drawings on the walls, created by Siboney Indians in pre-Columbian times. Some 235 pictographs were discovered in 1910 by a shipwrecked French man. The Cuevas de Punta del Este cave drawings are considered to be among the most important in the Caribbean and are now a national monument. It is believed that the pictographs represent a solar calendar. In all there are seven caves.

The area around Cuevas de Punta del Este also has a beautiful white sand beach for those who want to linger here. The caves can be visited on your own or as part of an organized tour.
