O'Brien's Tower

The sheer Moher cliffs extend from Hag's Head in the south, where they are 400ft/120m high, to O'Brien's Tower in the north, where they reach a height of 656ft/200m. Between these two points extends a generally flat plateau 5mi/8km long. From the top of the cliffs can be seen narrow strips of vegetation clinging to the cliff face and, far below, isolated pinnacles of rock, with the surf perpetually surging and thundering against the land and, high above, sea birds wheeling and crying. From O'Brien's Tower, built as a tea house in 1835, there are breathtaking views, extending in clear weather as far as the Aran Islands. The tower is just off the road (R457); in summer it houses an information center.
