Newton (pop. 1,600) was the home of the Maytag Corporation. FL Maytag introduced the hand-powered washer, followed by an electric motor. By 1925 an industrial boom had hit Newton, as workers arrived in the city to work for Maytag.
The Jasper County Museum in Newton features a historical exhibit of Maytag washing machines, tools and farm equipment, dinosaur tracks and a reproduction of period buildings.
