Missouri Valley (pop. 3,000) is located on a bluff overlooking the Missouri and Boyer River basins in Harrison County, Iowa. The town is served by many national transportation routes.
The DeSoto National Wildlife Refuge serves as a stopover for migrating ducks and geese during their fall migration between the Arctic nesting grounds and the Gulf Coast wintering areas. The 1860-era sternwheeler Bertrand was discovered on the refuge in 1968 and unearthed, visitors can view the discovery site.

Exhibits at the DeSoto Visitor Center include cultural and natural history displays as well as artifacts from the wreckage of the 1864 stern-wheeler, the Bertrand.

The Harrison County Historical Village is located northeast of Missouri Valley. It is home to 10,000 items housed in nine buildings. Displays include an 1853 original log cabin, Indian artifacts, firearms and Civil War artifacts.
