Jefferson Attractions
Jefferson (pop. 4,600) was first called New Jefferson. The town was named for President Thomas Jefferson and was laid out in 1854 on the North Raccoon River.
The Mahanay Memorial Carillon Tower was given to the people of Jefferson and Greene County in accordance with wills of Mr and Mrs Floyd Mahanay. The tower is built of glass and ceramic cement and features 14 bells that chime on the hour, quarter and half-hour.
A collection of historical telephone equipment is on display at the Jefferson Telephone Museum including old telephones, switchboards, and other communication items.
