Iowa City, in the east of the state, was its first capital. It is the seat of the University of Iowa, founded in 1847. Its other feature of interest is the birthplace of Herbert Hoover (1874-1964), 31st President of the United States.

Plum Grove
Plum Grove in Iowa City was built in 1844 as the retirement home of Gov Robert Lucas, the first territorial governor of Iowa. Period furnishings, typical of the time of the Lucas' residence, are found within the house. The house is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
