Cedar Falls (pop. 36,000) was an important milling center due to its location on the Cedar River. With the arrival of the railroad after the Civil War the town developed into a commercial and industrial area. More than 60mi/97km of recreation trails run throughout the city.
The Hearst Center for the Arts in Cedar Falls is comprised of two galleries, a recital hall and a small library. A permanent collection of works by Grant Wood is featured.

The University of Northern Iowa was founded in 1876. It has evolved from Iowa State Normal School to Iowa State Teachers College to State College of Iowa to the present day University. It is also home to the UNI Panthers baseball team.
The University of Northern Iowa Museum is a natural history museum that was founded in 1892 and contains more than 100,000 biology, geology and anthropology exhibits.
