Arnolds Park (pop. 1,100) was founded in 1860 by WB Arnold. The area became known for its recreational opportunities after the arrival of the train in 1883. The first amusement park ride was created by Arnold during the 1890s when a waterslide was created. Visitors would slide out into the lake on a toboggan.
The Abbie Gardner State Historic Site is known as one of the sites of the 1857 "Spirit Lake Massacre". Abbie was taken captive during this uprising with the Dakota Indians and eventually released. The cabin was built in 1856 by Rowlan Gardner, Abbie's father. The displays and furnishings are typical of pioneer life.
