History
Mengwi was once capital of the princedom of that name, whose rulers repeatedly contrived to reach an accommodation with other powers. They achieved this not only in their conflicts with the princes of Klungkung and Gianyar but also, at a later stage, during the period of Dutch colonial rule, in which the Rajas of Mengwi rapidly acquiesced.
In 1891 the rulers of Tabanan and Badung conquered the princedom of Mengwi, divided it between them and thus put an end to its independence.
