Mataram
Mataram is the chief town of Lombok and the administrative center of the Indonesian province of Nusa Tenggara Barat. It is now for all practical purposes amalgamated with the two formerly independent townships of Ampenan and Cakranegara, but each has preserved something of its distinctive character.
Mataram itself is a kind of garden city, in which all the main agencies of the provincial government have their offices.
Apart from the Museum there are no features of tourist interest in the area, unless the busy and colorful life of the town is so regarded. There are, however, a number of places to see within easy reach of the town.

Meru Temple
The Meru Temple was built in 1720 by the Balinese Prince Karang. In the innermost precinct of the extensive complex are several merus dedicated to the Hindu trinity of Shiva, Vishnu and Brahma.

This museum deals with the cultural history of Lombok, showing traditional tools, crafts, and models of Sasak houses.
Mataram Airport
Mataram Airport, on Lombok, is only a few kilometers north of the town of Mataram on the road to the resort of Senggigi Beach. It can be reached from the town only on taxis authorized to carry passengers to the airport. Visitors arriving at the airport, however, will find plenty of taxis waiting to take them to their hotel. Those traveling on a package holiday will be met by a representative of their tour operator outside the arrivals hall. For those arriving without a hotel reservation there is a hotel reservation desk in the arrivals hall.
