5 km (3 mi.) south-west of Gianyar lies the quiet little market township of Blahbatuh, which has two notable temples.
On the Denpasar road is the Pura Dalem Blahbatuh, with a seated figure of Buddha amid Hindu figures - evidence, perhaps, of the tolerance of the Balinese in religious matters.
The other temple is the Pura Puseh Blahbatuh or Pura Gaduh, rebuilt after its almost complete destruction in an earthquake in 1917. It contains a colossal head of a giant, said by the local people to be Jero Gede Mecaling, who according to legend came to Bali several times from the island of Penida and wrought great mischief with his demons and devils.
