Elkhart began as the crossroads of several American Indian trails and became a junction of major railways in the mid-1800s. Elkhart has several parks and beaches for hiking, biking, and swimming opportunities.
The Midwest Museum of American Art is located in Elkhart. Housed in a wonderfully restored neo classical bank building, the museum is a must see when in town. The Midwest Museum of American Art boasts of over 2000 items in its permanent collection including many originals by Norman Rockwell.
The National New York Central Railroad Museum is located in Elkhart. A visit to this fascinating museum is like taking a step back in time to the early to mid 19th Century. Here visitors will find wonderfully restored rolling stock and a plethora of informative and interesting displays. The National New York Central Railroad Museum is housed in a 100-year old freight complex and features one the largest rail yards in the United States.
The Old Wakarusa Railroad in Elkhart is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Visitors can go for a train ride on restored rolling stock that travels on 15" gauge track. The journey takes about 15 minutes and the train traverses two handmade trestle bridges and passes through a 33m / 100 ft tunnel.
The Hall of Fame has nearly 200 pioneers that have been inducted. The Museum displays trailers, photos, and memorabilia dating back to the 1920's and 1930's.

This Beaux-Arts style mansion was built in 1908. The house is furnished with antiques from that period including some original furnishings. Restored velvet and silk wall coverings as well as painted ceilings are interior features; the wrap-around marble veranda is a highlight of the exterior.
