Majuli Island
Majuli is the largest River Island in the world set in the middle of the Brahmaputra River. Majuli Island is also famous for the 22 ancient Hindu monasteries. The preservation of Assamese arts is kept alive through these monasteries or satras as they are also known. Most consist of a large prayer hall with a simple shrine, monks' dormitories and bathing tanks.
Eash satras has nurtured certain art and craft traditions such as Garamur, a center for ancient weapons; Natun Samugri is a center for mask making; and Kamlabari makes fine boats.
