Gwalior Attractions

Gwalior is a city in Madhya Pradesh that has served as the center of several of North India's historic kingdoms. The most significant attraction is the Gwalior Fort with the city sprawling beneath it.

The Old Town of Gwalior lies to the east and contains the tomb of the Sufi saint Mahommed Ghausand the tomb of Mian Tansen, a great singer and known as one of the 'Nine Jewels' of Akbar's court. The Old Town is home to white sandstone mosque, palaces, rock temples and statues of archeological interest.

The new section of Gwalior is the site of numerous factories that produce cotton, yarn, paint, ceramics, chemicals, and leather products.

Gwalior Fort, built on a steep hill, represents 700 years of Indian architecture. Inside the fort are many interesting buildings including, Hindu temples, and monuments.
Man Singh Palace
Man Singh built man Singh Palace between 1486 and 1516. It features two open courts that are surrounded by apartments.

The palace is also known as the Chit Mandir or Painted Palace, because of the tiled and painted decorations that adorn the walls. Ducks, elephants and peacocks were painted in bright colors that are still vibrant today.

Underground the Man Singh Palace has two stories that were utilized during hot weather and during the Mughal period, as prison cells.
