Champaner was the medieval capital of Gujarat, established in the 8th C. It is located at the foot of the small mountain, Pavagadh.
Champaner has many religious structures including the unique mosques of Hindu and Jain design. The Jama Masjid was built in 1513 and features a carved entrance, the ruler's prayer hall and a lake located behind the building that was used for washing before prayer. The Kewda Masjid has stairs to the rooftop and features globe-like domes. The Iteri Masjid has brick minarets that resemble factory chimneys.
An enormous fort wall at the base of Pavagadh surrounded the military, civic and religious buildings.
The Kalikamata Temple on top of Pavagadh is an important shrine that attracts large numbers of pilgrims throughout the year. The Lakulisha Temple is the oldest monument on Pavagadh, built in the 10th to 11th C.
