Bhopal is the state capital of Madhya Pradesh. Situated around two artificial lakes, Bhopal has an old quarter with distinctive architecture featuring a variety of influences such as Hindu, Persian, Afghani and some French.
The city of Bhopal is enclosed by masonry walls and located on the northern bank of a large lake.
Unfortunately Bhopal will remembered in history for the toxic gas leak from a Union Carbide plant on December 3, 1984. Forty tons of noxious gas leaked in the streets of Bhopal, killing more than 3 thousand people and injuring anywhere from 150,000 to 600,000 others. There are no health risks for visitors as long as they avoid drinking the local water.
Sites of interest in Bhopal include the Taj-ul-Masjid, one of the largest in India; Dhai Seedi ki Masjid, one of the smallest mosques in Asia; Bharat Bhavan, the cultural center of Bhopal and the Rashtriya Manav Sangrahalaya or Museum of Man.
