Amritsar - Golden Temple Attractions

Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Ram Das and is an ancient city of Sikh history and culture.

The main attraction in Amritsar is the Golden Temple, the holiest of Sikh shrines. Hindus and people of other faiths also travel to the Golden Temple to pay homage. The Golden Temple is decorated with marble on the lower half and the upper half is copper covered with gold plating thus giving it its name.

The temple was built with a blend of Hindu and Islamic styles. The lower marble walls have inlaid floral and animal motifs while the golden dome represents a lotus flower. The lotus flower is a symbol in the Sikh faith as they aim to live a pure life.

The spiritual atmosphere of the Golden Temple in Amritsar is well worth the visit. Four priests inside the temple continuously chant from the Sikh holy book, which is broadcast throughout the temple complex. Pilgrims and visitors must remove their shoes, wash their feet and cover their heads before entering.
