Rockford, Illinois
The city was founded by African-American slave Lewis Lemon, his master Germanicus Kent and Thatcher Blake, who built a sawmill in 1834 near the ford. Rockford was given its name as the Rock River bisects it and for the shallow ford used before the area was settled.
