Cairo Attractions
Cairo was named for its resemblance to the Egyptian city. Illinois, Kentucky and Missouri are separated at Cairo. It was the site of Union Army training and supplies during the Civil War.
Horseshoe Lake Conservation Area includes a 2,400-acre shallow lake. Visitors can enjoy picnicking, camping, boating, fishing and hunting.
Magnolia Manor is a 14-room, Italianate-style structure that was built in 1869. The house is five stories high and contains the original bed in which General Ulysses S. Grant slept back in 1880. The double walled house has many original 19th century furnishings.
The US Custom House was established in 1872 after Cairo was designated a Port of Delivery. Within this Romanesque limestone building are American Indian artifacts, a desk used by Ulysses S Grant and a display from an early 1900s post office.
