Ilhéus
Situation and Characteristics
Ilhéus, founded in 1534 under the name of Vila Velha de São Jorge dos Ilhéus, is a port in southern Bahia, 462km/287mi from Salvador. It owes its prosperity to cacao, the growing of which was promoted by the Jesuits in the 18th century, and which in
the 19th century became the country's second most important export. The Museu Regional do Cacau in the center of the town illustrates the civilização grapiúna - the development of the Ilhéus area, from the growing of the cacao trees to the urbanized growth of nearby production centers.
