From the Morro de Espia, a hill 1km/.7mi from the town center, there is a fine view of the town. 28km/17mi south on the road to Pariquera-Aáu is the Jairà sambaqui (shell-mound). To the east is the island of Comprida (15 minutes by ferry), with bathing beaches and other sambaquis. On the road north to Icapara are the ruins of an old sugar-mill, with slave huts (2km/1.25mi); the Toca de Bugio waterfall (6km/4mi); Prainha (12km/7.5mi); Varela beach (17km/10.5mi); and Barra da Ribeira (20km/12.5mi, then 15 minutes by ferry).
