Château de Modave

Standing 12km/8mi south of Huy high above the Hoyoux is the Château de Modave with its striking flecked main tower. Onto the part of the building projecting over the river the French architect Jean Goujon built a château in the most attractive Louis XIV style with numerous water games.

These are supplied by a hydraulic machine, invented by the carpenter Rennequin Sualem from Liège, which pumps up water from the Hoyoux. In 1669 Sualem constructed similar grounds for Louis XIV's château in Marly, near Versailles.

Bois-et-Borsu

The church of Saint-Lambert in Bois-et-Borsu, 7km/4mi southeast of the Château de Modave, contains beautiful 15th C. frescoes representing scenes from the life of Christ and the Saints Lambert and Hubert. The small church was built in 911 and altered around 200 years later.

Chateau de Modave Rooms

The grand rooms of the château, 20 of which are included in the tour, are richly appointed with 17th and 18th C. furniture. The architect and sculptor Jean-Christian Haensche designed the multi-colored stucco ceilings in the vestibule (heraldic family tree of the owners Comtes de Marchin) and in the Hercules room. The alcoves of the Duchess de Montmorency, the cousin of the French king, are especially splendid.
