Southwest of Husum, the Eiderstedt peninsula extends into the Wattenmeer. Characteristic of this area are the large and handsome farmhouses (haubarge).

West of Tönning on the Eiderstedt peninsula is the little town of Garding. In the Markt are the Late Romanesque parish church and the birthplace (No. 6) of the great classical scholar Theodor Mommsen (1817-1903).
Roter Haubarg
10km/6mi southwest of Husum on the Eiderstedt Peninsula, at Simonsberg, is the Roter Haubarg, a fine old farmhouse which now belongs to the Eiderstedt Heimatmuseum at St Peter-Ording.

On the Eider estuary, which bounds the southeast side of the Eiderstedt peninsula, is the little port of Tönning with its charming old gabled houses and the Romanesque and Gothic Laurentiuskirche (St Lawrence's Church; c. 1220), with a Baroque tower.
On the harbor stands the Packhaus (1783), with an exhibition on the history of the town.
