(Local Name: Zempléni-hegység) The Zemplin Mountains (Zempléni-hegység) between the Hernád and Bodrog rivers form the northeastern edge of the North Hungarian Central Uplands. They are of volcanic origin; the highest of them, Nagy-Milic (896m (2940ft)), lies right on the border with the Slovak republic. Numerous fruit plantations are found among the stepped uplands. The dense woods consist of oak, beech and spruce. The volcanic activity resulted in mineral veins (precious metals), kaolin and betonite. Andesite and perlite are also mined.
