Four km (21/2mi.) along the narrow road which leads past the Hámori tó pond into the Bükk Mountains, lies Újmassa, the "cradle" of the Hungarian iron and steel industry. Frigyes Fazola established Hungary's first iron foundry here in 1813. His father, Henrik Fazola, a skilled blacksmith who had moved to Eger from Würzburg in Germany, built a furnace to smelt iron-ore found in the Bükk Mountains. Frigyes moved production to Újmassa and built a new, larger foundry which is now an important item of industrial archaeology. A small museum provides information about the early days of iron smelting.
