Mátra Mountains
Together with Lake Balaton and the Danube Bend, this central mountain range rising to more than 1000m (3300ft) is one Hungary's most popular regions with both day-trippers and holiday-makers; Budapest is only 80km (50mi.) away. 50km (30mi.) long and covering an area of 1000sq.km (390sq.mi.), it forms a part of the North Hungarian Central Range. There are good roads and a total of 400km (250mi.) of trails and paths, as well as ski-slopes - snow can be expected on between 100 and 120 days in the year on the upper slopes.
