Bükk National Park
Since 1976 the scenically most beautiful part of the mountain range, especially the plateau covered with dense beech forests, has been designated a National Park. In summer in particular, large numbers of holiday-makers and day-trippers visit the National Park, seeking rest and relaxation in the seclusion of the mountainous countryside. The tourist center of Bükk National Park is the holiday resort of Szilvásvárad, which offers plenty in the way of accommodation (often in former state nursing homes), restaurants and snack bars.
Excursion
Highly recommended is a trip from the Szalajka Valley near Szilvásvárad to Lillafüred (journey time about 1 1/2 hours; subject to toll charges), an opportunity to become acquainted with the natural beauty of the mountains. The narrow road winds its way up to the top of the Bükk Range, from where there are magnificent panoramic views over the mountain landscape.
