Into the Pyrenees on N 330

C 136 (good for most of the way, but hilly and winding) runs north up the valley of the Río Isuela towards the Pyrenees, with the Sierra de Guarra (2076m/6811ft) on the right. Beyond Nueno are a number of short tunnels. The road then skirts the green waters of the Embalse de Arguis and comes to Arguis, with a magnificent view of the plain to the rear.

Sabinanigo and Puerto de Monrepos, Spain

The road continues uphill from Arguis, with many bends and fine views, and through a tunnel to the Puerto de Monrepós (1,262m/4,141ft). It then descends into the valley of the Río Gállego and comes to the industrial town of Sabiñánigo. 2km/1.25mi beyond the town is a road junction at which C 134 goes off on the left to Jaca.
Sabiñánigo is the main town in the El Serrablo region. Some of the highlights of the town are the numerous medieval churches.

Biescas, Spain

C 136 runs north up the Gállego valley to Biescas (alt. 865m/2838ft), a little market town situated astride the Gállego, with some handsome old houses.

Parque Nacional de Ordesa (Monte)

From Biescas a detour can be made on C 140, which runs east over the Puerto de Cotefablo (1,423m/4,669ft) to Torla and, beyond this, the magnificent Parque Nacional de Ordesa (1,320m/4,331ft), an area of rich and varied vegetation with numerous gorges, waterfalls, etc., in the valley of the Río de Ordesa below Monte Perdido (3,352m/10,998ft). This is splendid walking and climbing country.

Monasterio de Santa Elena

From Biescas C 136 continues north up the Gállego valley, through beautiful mountain scenery. Above the road on the right is the convent of Santa Elena, a pilgrimage center.

Gargantas de Escalar

15km/9mi from Biescas a road branches off on the right and runs northeast through the narrow Gargantas de Escalar to the spa of Balneario de Panticosa (alt. 1,659m/5,443ft; radioactive sulfurous water), magnificently situated on a lake in a rocky cirque.

Balneario de Panticosa

Many people come to take the cure here, but the spa resort of Balneario de Panticosa also attracts large numbers of skiers.
The ski hill of Panticosa offers 38 runs and 15 lifts, although the hill is constantly expanding.

El Formigal, Spain

From Sallent the road continues uphill at a moderate gradient to the winter sports resort of El Formigal (alt. 1500m/4920ft)..
The ski hill features over 90 runs with 21 lifts.

Puerto de Portalet

The Puerto de Portalet (1,792m/5,880ft) lies on the Spanish-French frontier. The crossing is closed from November to May.

Regato del Bidasoa

This group of villages is nestled away in the Pyrenees, each featuring a splendid display of Basque architecture.
