Description
3km/2mi southwest of the town of Hobro (follow the sign "Vikingeborgen Fyrkat") will be found the remains of a circular stronghold dating from 960. The Danish National Museum has reconstructed the circular rampart (Fyrkatborgen) and a Viking house about 1,000 years old. The circular rampart, broken through in four places, shows that the site was strongly fortified and probably served the Viking army as a training camp and winter quarters. However, archaeological digs indicate that women and children also lived within its walls and that craftsmen worked there. Before the Danish National Museum started digging in the 1950s there was nothing here but fields. In the 1980s a replica of a Viking house was constructed near the stronghold. All the walls of the house were supported on planks placed at an angle. The roof is covered with about 25,000 oak shingles and the beams over the doors leading into the hall are decorated with carvings in the Nordic style. It is planned to build a complete Viking village about 500m/550yd from the Fyrkat stronghold; it will consist of eight or nine houses, both large and small.

A Viking play is performed in the Viking house during May 30 through June 14.
