Hobart - Salamanca Place
Salamanca Place, built between 1835 and 1860, is a busy street of handsome warehouses now occupied by restaurants and pubs, antique dealers and souvenir shops (street musicians; craft market on Saturday). It is named after the battle of Salamanca (1812).
The oldest building in the harbor area is the Guard House (1818) on Battery Point. The site of the gun battery which once stood here is now occupied by Princes Park. Here too there was a signal station which could communicate visually with the one on Mount Nelson, to the south.
