The Historical Museum, in the northern part of the old town of Herakleion, displays Cretan folk art and relics of the period of Turkish rule. On the second floor is a rich ethnographic collection.
The museum contains exhibits from the Byzantine, Venetian and Turkish periods and historical documents of more recent Cretan history.
There is also a rich collection of folk art consisting of local costumes, textiles, wood carvings and embroidery as well as a representation of a typical Cretan house.
