Surroundings of Hebron

The upland region to the south and east of Hebron has many ancient remains which show that even after the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70 there was a relatively large and prosperous Jewish population not only, as previously believed, in Galilee but also in Judaea. Some of their settlements were taken over by the Byzantines, and some still survive as Arab villages.
