Paia is an old sugar town that has turned into a modern day surfers town due to nearby Hookipa beach. It is best known as a crafts shopping town on the way to Hana.

Just east of the town sits the Manto Kuji Buddhist Temple with its cemetary with the tombstones of early immagrant workers from the orient.
