Lanai City was established in the 1920s by the Dole Pineapple Company for its workers and today is inhabited by 98% of Lanai's population. The town stands about 1575ft/480m above sea level in the shadow of Lanaihale, Lanai's highest mountain. The Norfolk pines, planted by the New Zealander George Munro (who ran a ranch for a short time on Hawaii
in the 19th c.), now give Lanai City an almost park-like appearance. The mostly uniform houses with their corrugated iron roofs are multi-colored and surrounded by flower and vegetable gardens. The main street is Lanai Avenue which has roads leading off it numbered from three to thirteen (there is no one or two). In the north, on land once belonging to the Munro Ranch, is the excellent Cavendish Golf Course.
