Bishop Museum and Planetarium

Bishop Museum, Hawaii's state museum, contains one of the best collection of Polynesian arts and artifacts in the state, including an important collection of the feathered royal standards (kahilis) which essentially served as flags for past royalty. Hawaiian feathered capes and helmets are other highlights. There is a large collection of artifacts from the South Pacific.
Other major collections include the objects brought by the Japanese, Chinese, Filipino, Korean, Portuguese, German and other early settlers.
Natural history exhibits, including whaling artifacts complete the museum.
One interesting aspect of the museum is the building itself. Founded in 1889 the staircases and display cases are of rich woods. The main display wing boasts original display cases lining the balconies which wrap around multistoried atrium. There is great charm in this antique of a museum.

Ala Moana Park

Ala Moana Park features a beach but many people simply come here for the view of Waikiki.

Punchbowl Cemetery

Formally named National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, the interior of this hill, being the crater of an extinct volcano, resembles a giant punchbowl.
The cemetery contains nearly 40,000 mostly military graves in trimmed lawns. A major memorial comprises steps and walls of the names of the fallen at the end opposite the entrance. The overall setting and landscaping conveys a peaceful dignity.
However, the part not to be missed in visiting punchbowl are the views of Honolulu from the south rim of the grounds.

Contemporary Museum

The Contemporary Museum features a collection of paintings and sculptures, most of which date from 1940 to the present. The gardens are a highlight of the Contemporary Museum featuring a meditation area and many of the sculptures. The original core of the building is of modern design built in 1925 as a private home, the Spalding house.
The museum has a second facility at the First Hawaiian Center, 999 Bishop Street in Honolulu.

The Arboretum maintains a number of theme gardens that visitors can easily wander through. Among these are a herb and spice garden, bromeliad garden, the Beatrice H. Krauss Hawaiian Ethnobotanical Garden, and many others. The facility is both beautiful and educational.

Manoa Falls

A path at the entrance to the Lyon Arboretum leads 1.5mi/2.4km to the Manoa Falls where bathing is permitted.

Puu Ualakaa State Wayside

Views here are similar to those from Punchbowl, but the skyline of Honolulu from here includes Punchbowl in the foreground. The views of Waikiki and Diamond Head are slightly closer than those from Punchbowl. While both views are worthwhile, those pressed for time will probably gain more meaning from Punchbowl.
