The Sint-Katharina béguinage north of Sint-Quintinuskathedraal was originally built 1245-1567 beyond the town wall south of the town as it was at that time and was called 'Extra Muros'.
In 1567 it was completely destroyed; in 1571 work began on a new béguinage, this time within the town walls. At the beginning of the 18th C. the premises were extended and underwent conversion. The buildings from this later period stand in the southern part of the grounds. The Classical church was destroyed during air raids in 1944; the only evidence of it are some ruins.
