Harrismith - Drakensberg Botanic Garden

5km/3mi south of Harrismith is the Drakensberg Botanic Garden (area 114ha/282ac), with plants from the three different zones in the Drakensberg: the highland zone (1,200-1,800m/3,900-5,900ft), the sub-alpine zone (1,800-2,800m/5,900-9200ft) and the alpine zone (2,800-3,300m/9,200-10,800ft). Only part of the area (round the two reservoirs created by British troops during the Boer War) is regularly cared for; the rest of the gardens, through which a hiking trail winds its way, passing impressive rock formations, is left in its natural state
